Attachment avoidance

Within adult attachment models, a tendency to minimise attachment needs or distance from dependence and closeness. It is not equivalent to healthy independence, a fixed personality type or a retrospectively proven childhood cause.

Closeness, dependency, or support is minimised just when care becomes relevant.
Self-sufficiency protects against vulnerability, intrusion, shame, or rejection.
The person distances after warmth, repair, or perceived demand.

When this may not fit

Distance reflects healthy boundaries, cultural preference, or a realistic safety concern.
Reduced engagement is mainly due to depression, psychosis, cognitive impairment, or access barriers.
The person wants closeness but cannot access it because of dissociation or social anxiety.
Alternative explanations to exclude: realistic mistrust, cultural norms, prior harmful care, depressive withdrawal, social anxiety and a preference for privacy.
