Consistent with [Alcohol Use Disorder] [specifier(s)]. Over a 12-month period, there has been a clinically significant impaired pattern of alcohol use manifested by two or more of the following: alcohol taken in larger amounts or over a longer period than intended; persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control use; a great deal of time spent obtaining, using, or recovering from alcohol; craving or strong urge to use alcohol; recurrent use resulting in failure to fulfil major role obligations; continued use despite persistent or recurrent social or interpersonal problems caused or exacerbated by alcohol; important activities given up or reduced; recurrent use in physically hazardous situations; continued use despite knowledge of a persistent or recurrent physical or psychological problem caused or exacerbated by alcohol; tolerance; withdrawal symptoms or alcohol use to avoid withdrawal. The pattern reflects impaired control, social impairment, risky use, and pharmacological dependence, and is not better explained by another substance, a primary medical condition, or the effects of a medication.
