Consistent with [Selective Mutism] [specifier(s)]. Since early childhood, there has been persistent failure to speak in specific social situations where speaking is expected; consistent ability to speak in other situations; interference with educational, occupational, or social communication; duration of at least one month (beyond the first month of school); speech failure not attributable to lack of language knowledge or comfort with the language used. The presentation is further characterised by marked anxiety, avoidance, and behavioural inhibition associated with speaking demands. These symptoms have resulted in clinically significant distress or impairment in academic, social, or interpersonal functioning, and are not better explained by communication disorders, autism spectrum disorder, psychotic disorders, or lack of language proficiency.
